How to Fix File Extension Errors

October 10th, 2010 TechBob Posted in File Extension Errors Comments Off

File extension errors can occur for a variety of reasons such as your system not supporting or recognizing a specific type of file extension. When this happens, you will receive a file extension error. This can prove extremely frustrating, but the good news is that there are some things that you can do to fix file extension errors. Additionally, there are also some procedures you can conduct that will stop file extension errors from occurring in the first place.

Only Download from Trusted Sources

Many times a file extension error will occur when you are attempting to open a file that is attached to an e-mail or you are trying to download a file from a website. When this happens, you get a box that asks you where you would like to attempt to open the file or you will be prompted to go online in order to open the file. If this occurs, you must be sure that the source you are downloading the file from is trusted before you attempt to fix the file extension error.

Check Your Spelling

Another common file extension error occurs due to the wrong type of file being typed or a typo occurring within the file extension name. For example, a .doc file extension would not open properly if it was written as .dob. Always check the actual file extension itself before you get too far ahead of yourself with the fix.

Keep Your System Ship-Shape

The easiest way to fix file extension errors is by preventing them from ever happening in the first place. This can be done by ensuring that your system is up to date with its virus scans and malware scans. Additionally, you will want to be sure that your systems registry is free of any errors that would then prevent it from being able to read certain types of files. To be sure that your registry is clean, you can conduct a free scan with a trusted website that will scan your system for errors and also let you know what needs to be addressed. Once your registry is fixed you may find that the file extension problems you had are now a thing of the past.
